Welcome To the David O. McKay Academy

We are a school built on a foundation that seeks to teach the whole child, nurturing the spiritual and emotional, as well as the academic –
while recognizing different learning styles, talents, gifts, and abilities.

We are opening two campuses in Las Vegas this Fall 2016.

Who We Are

The David O. McKay International Academy is a K-12 Private School based on the teachings of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. We are here to help you teach your children. Call us at 702 758-8822.

Our Mission

The Mission of the Academy is to strengthen the belief and testimony of its students in the doctrines and practices of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, to inspire academic excellence, and to teach respect, responsibility, and self-government while fostering a love for Jesus Christ, for family, and for country.

Our Committment

We commit to providing a challenging, engaging, and varied curriculum program that meets rigorous national standards, prepares students for higher education, and opens doors to lifelong success. We will provide the best tools, staff, and service possible to assist you in your family’s education goals.

Our K-8 Program

This Curriculum is built on a scriptural foundation of history (HIS Story). Secular events are integrated so that the child can see for himself, the Savior’s divine mission to “bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man,” (Moses 1″39).

The program presents history on a four year rotation basis. Every child in the family studies the same time period each year. Over four years, each student will cover all of the Standard Works and all periods of World, with a focus on North American History. Volumes do not need to be taught in chronological order. The four year rotation is as follows:

Year One: Pre-existence to 5 B.C.
Year Two: 5 B.C. to 1500 A.D.
Year Three: 1500 A.D. to 1900 A.D.
Year Four: 1900 A.D. to Modern day

  • Whole Integrated Curriculum

David O. McKay International Academy curriculum is built on a scriptural and chronological foundation. All subjects are integrated to create a single course that leads the student to discover the relevance, reliance, and correlation of all things. This journey of discovery culminates in the student’s realization of his or her role, or divine mission as part of the human family.

  • A Challenging Curriculum

Our Elementary grades 1 – 4, and our Middle School grades 5 – 8 all utilize the LIFE School Curriculum, a program that has been in the development for over twenty years and has been tested in the home and classroom.

  • A Parent Teacher Partnership

Although you, the parent, are the primary teacher for grade levels 1 – 8 when enrolling in the online program, a certified instructor is assigned to your child and will work with you both on a weekly basis as you move through the program. Weekly assessments are reviewed by the instructor and a semester-end report card is issued. Your child’s teacher is your partner and support in the education of your child.

  • Self-paced Middle School Coursework

Students in grades 5 through 8, although still under the direction of parents and teacher, will become more independent learners – increasing their ability to find answers by research, exploration, and documentation. Seventh and Eighth grade students who are eager to move forward may begin high school level coursework.

Our High School Program

What is FOUNDATION 4?

FOUNDATION 4 simply means that the main four core courses are taught in an integrated way.

The High School FOUNDATION 4 program teaches the student important information about the world in which we live. But the key element, and most important aspect of the program is that it guides the student through the process of self-learning and discovery. This process of “Research and ReTeach” shows the student how to find his own answers, process the answer emotionally and intellectually, and then express what he has learned in both written and oral form.

Elective Courses are available too, and students take part in creating, not only their course track, but course content.

  • Real Life Application

Most learning is lost without practical and emotional application. Course assignments offer students the opportunity to expand newly acquired knowledge by putting theory into practice. Assignments are completed in varied and creative ways, giving the students freedom to learn according to his learning style. Students are also given the opportunity to be placed in the role of teacher — thus reinforcing long-term retention.

  • Foundations For Higher Learning

Preparation opens doors to opportunity. Students at the Academy learn how to study and to set and meet challenging goals. They are taught to research, and write clearly and cohesively at a college level. An extensive classic reading list opens their mind to different points of view. ACT prep activities prepare them for the college application process. The “Senior Project” builds planning and leadership skills which provide long-term benefits to the student and the community.

  • Technology Driven Courses

Our courses are supported by Instucture’s CANVAS, a course delivery program used by universities all over the world. You can take a course “Test Drive” and see if our program is a good fit for you.

What our students say about the Academy

Junae

I’m a Freshman this year. My experience so far has been wonderful. The teachers are friendly and make school exciting. The assignments really make you think, and I like that I can be creative in how I complete and submit some of my assignments.

Adriana

I didn’t think I’d like the school – too churchy – but I am getting to know myself better as I go through the lessons and I am liking the way it makes me feel.
